The shorter days and cooler weather of wintertime is the perfect time to address hyperpigmentation.
The primary cause of this common concern is prolonged sun exposure, but there are also some internal causes such as hormone fluctuations and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation caused by acne or other skin traumas to take into consideration.
Healing from hyperpigmentation is possible and takes a sustained approach. The most effective treatments we've found include a strong commitment to reversing the damage through adopting healthy behaviors, defining a protocol that works for your lifestyle and that you'll be able to remain loyal to, using products that contain key ingredients and wearing SPF daily.
A few of our favorite key ingredients are highlighted here:
Products rich in Vitamin C are great for brightening skin. Used with sunscreen in the morning and retinols at night, collagen synthesis is improved and the skin is better protected against ultraviolet photo damage from the environment. Vitamin C can increase sensitivity to the sun, so avoid using high concentrations (including natural forms, like Rosehip Oil) during the day.
Retinols are powerful exfoliators and work by increasing the rate of cell turnover from the inside out. These can be found in lower concentrations in time release formulas safe for daytime use and in stronger concentrations for night-time use only.
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins like collagen and elastin. These potent little ingredients are highly effective players in influencing a healthy new normal for the skin, increasing its ability to protect and heal itself from photodamage.
Physical SPFs featuring zinc oxide and titanium dioxide reflect damaging ultraviolet rays off the skin's surface preventing further damage, we strongly recommend an SPF of 30 or more for daily protection.
In the treatment room, we use professional strength concentrations of these ingredients and targeted modalities such as LED, peels or microdermabrasion to help you achieve optimal results. We customize effective protocols that include client education and always stress the importance of using quality products at home that support and prolong the positive effects of in-studio treatments.
